Streetbite (formerly The Homeless Thing) was set up by a group of students who wanted to do something practical to help homeless people in Cambridge. There are a disproportionately large number of homeless people in Cambridge and Streetbite aims to help by taking out tea, coffee and sandwiches to those we meet on the streets. We organise a rota where small groups of volunteers go out at breakfast, lunch and tea-time each day, distributing food and drink to the homeless around the town centre. Normally, each volunteer would only go out once a week, so the demands on their time are low. Each group spend a few pounds buying the food they will use. However, the main focus of Streetbite is to get to know the homeless for who they are and to realise that they are real people rather than just a faceless issue. Homeless people often feel ignored by society, so taking the time to have a chat as the food is distributed can make the biggest difference of all. Everyone is welcome to join.
