You'll see a fair amount of icebreakers in freshers week. But we believe these're a valuable Service to have all year round. Different people settle in at different rates and some look for new things to do at any point in the year. So we offer:
- Sheila and Her Dog: we read childrens' books in silly voices and write silly stories one line at a time.
- Cambridge Safer Space Waterfighting: we run battles and games involving a variety of harmless toy weaponry in secret spots around town.
You can join one or both: each has its own email announce list.
Our Safer Spaces are based upon the ethos 'people who are upset are believed and supported without having to say why, with apologies and non-repeats of what caused it expected'. They're for all who wish for, need, or enjoy an abuse-free environment, as well as those willing to respect us who just turn up for the fun.
Sheila and Her Dog has a long and glorious history. We're a silly society that meets to read classic children's books in silly voices, with the words often slightly changed to make it more amusing. Our aftermaths are more varied, including occasional meets/parodies of a number of smaller silly societies. We also run chainwriting, where anyone who follows our rules is welcome to contribute as much or as little as they want to the growing story. See http://www.srcf.ucam.org/sheila/Front-Page.html for more details and the latest chain.
Cambridge Safer Spaces Waterfighting is one of the main traditions in safe and non-alarming toy weapons fighting in Cambridge - we carefully insist on doing this in an entirely friendly manner, and based on 'what actually works' that lies within safe, non-alarming and friendly rather than on 'what looks good'. We switch up some of the combat rules between fights so as to favour different people each time rather than just athletes or people with big guns. Our hide-n-sneak is legendary. See http://cssw.soc.srcf.net for more details.
Be welcome to look at our websites, and you can always email firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com to find out when our next events are on.
