Statement on Coronavirus
The spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) is a source of concern for many students and we are keen to ensure that students are able to access the most up-to-date information and guidance in relation to this matter.
The University has published official guidance for students on coronavirus. This guidance is updated regularly and can be found on the University website here: www.cam.ac.uk/notices/coronavirus-advice-for-university-staff-students-and-departments
CUSU has been lobbying the University to ensure the needs of students are properly accounted for in their preparations and contingency planning, particularly for students who do not live in the United Kingdom permanently. We are calling on the University and Colleges to ensure accommodation is available free of charge for students who are unable to return home over the vacation due to travel restrictions. We will remain in close communication with the University as preparations continue and ensure that students are kept up to date with any significant developments.
We would encourage all students to follow the official NHS advice in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Remember to wash your hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean. Full NHS guidance in relation to coronavirus can be found here: www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19
We would also like to take this opportunity to condemn the racist abuse and harassment that some East Asian students have experienced since the outbreak of coronavirus. We would encourage students to report any incidents of this nature using the anonymous reporting tools available here:
End Everyday Racism: racismatcambridge.org
University of Cambridge Anonymous Reporting: studentcomplaints.admin.cam.ac.uk/anonymous-reporting
Students can also formally report racist abuse and harassment through the relevant College or University disciplinary procedure or to the police, if they so wish. If you are unsure about how best to report instances of racist abuse or harassment, the Students’ Unions’ Advice Service (SUAS) can provide free, confidential and independent advice. You can find more information at studentadvice.cam.ac.uk.
