On Monday 28th October, a motion was presented to CUSU Council to endorse the proposals for the creation of a new, single students’ union in the form of Cambridge SU.
The motion resolved:
- To endorse the proposals for the creation of a new, single students’ union in the form of Cambridge SU;
- To authorise a referendum on the creation of Cambridge SU, to be held on the basis of the timetable set out in Appendix A;
- To mandate the CUSU Executive to campaign in favour of the proposals;
- To mandate the CUSU Executive to work with the existing CUSU Campaigns and their GU Executive counterparts in devising structures of the new Campaigns in Cambridge SU.
The motion passed with 33 for and 4 against.
This follows the GU passing a similar motion at GU Council on 21st October. This motion passed with 13 votes for and none against with three abstentions, mandating the GU Executive to campaign in favour of the referendum. Following this the GU trustees resolved to call a referendum of members of the Graduate Union.
The referendum will be held alongside the Michaelmas elections for the GU Executive Committee and NUS Liberation Conference delegates.
For the referendum to pass, there must be a simple majority in favour with at least 10% of CUSU membership voting, and 200 GU members cast a vote and the majority of votes cast are in favour. Further referendum information will be published shortly.
