The May Ball Project
The Worthwhile Balls project is all about capitalising on the opportunity provided by a May Ball to raise awareness for underrepresented causes. Its important because these events bring together hundreds of Cambridge students, who are statistically likely to be powerful and influential members of society.
By presenting our ball as ‘not for profit’, and choosing a charity that is demonstrably underrepresented by the more powerful and influential in our society, everyone who interacted with our Ball could see how much good it could do for a worthwhile cause. This gave the ball an advantage it wouldn’t have otherwise had – providers and performers were willing to contribute for far lower prices, many even for free, or throw in extra perks as an act of kindness, resulting in a line-up of events and features that would have otherwise been unaffordable on our budget. I’m currently producing an information pack with more information about the project which I will distribute to college representatives attending the Big Audition Weekend.
In the meantime, if you’re interested in the project and want any more information about it you can contact me at welfare@cusu.cam.ac.uk , and please see this video for an example of a Worthwhile Ball: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B9ntUjlyxB61bXlkUGdnUUNhbGs
All the best,
