I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that sanitary products are essential for a lot of people. They’re also pretty expensive, because the Government classes them as a ‘luxury, non-essential item’ with 5% VAT. With Cambridge being identified as one of the most expensive cities for students to live in and a tight student budget, the cost of sanitary products can add up each month.
A lot of Student Unions around the country have started selling sanitary products at cost-price in their shops, and some of them are even giving them out for free. FINALLY, I say, my role as Coordinator being largely responsible for the running of the office but also for CUSU’s services, A USEFUL SERVICE WE CAN PROVIDE (nothing on the state of the minibus, honest).
We might not have an official shop like other SUs, and we’re also currently situated in the middle of a building site (I really miss the whale), but we do have a till and the ability to bulk buy sanitary products for a lot cheaper than your local supermarket. So we’re going to do it! I went to the shop earlier to buy some tampons and got a box of 20 for £2.90, which is 14.5p per tampon. I looked at a supplier, and we can sell them to you (at cost-price) for as little as 9p each, or £1.85 for a box of 20 – and similar savings for sanitary towels too.
This can happen pretty quickly – all we need to know is what you want! You can fill in the survey here. It’s also not the only thing we could do – in an ideal world, you’d be able to get them for free. Or at the very least, we’d be able to give them to you for free. To do that, we’d need more money, but we’re looking at that!
