Shadowing Scheme

CUSU Shadowing Scheme - Applications are bow closed!

The annual CUSU Shadowing Scheme enables Sixth Form students (Year 12 - England and Wales; S5 - Scotland; Year 13 - Northern Ireland) and potential mature students to experience University of Cambridge student life first hand. We target prospective students from schools or families with little or no history of top university applications.

Participants in the Scheme ('shadow students') come to stay at the University for three days in late January/early February. Hosted in College accommodation, they each get to 'shadow' a current undergraduate who is studying the subject in which they are interested, and accompany the undergrad to lectures, classes and supervisions. To give a full flavour of student life, a wide range of social activities are organised and offered to participants by CUSU and student societies, allowing shadows to meet students and see day-to-day life here. Shadows arrive early afternoon on the Thursday, and leave on Saturday morning.

We aim to help participants realise that there are 'people like them' at Cambridge, and that students here have a balance between working and social life too!

You can apply to mentor a student, and have them shadow you for three days on any of the following dates in 2017.  This will involve them attending your supervisions, lectures and labs (if possible!) and you showing them Cambridge and attending meals with them and your College Access Officer.  You will be matched with someone who wants to study your subject.   We will DBS check all those who apply to be mentors in November.

The Shadowing Scheme is free for shadows to attend, but that means we rely heavily on the generousity of Cambridge students and their Colleges.  Some shadows will stay in College guest rooms, but the majority will stay in rooms donated by students.  If you are able to move out of your room for the duration of a Shadowing Scheme weekend and donate it to a shadow, please do specify this when you apply!

The dates of the 2017 Scheme are:

Thursday 19th - Saturday 21st January 2017
Thursday 26th - Saturday 28st January 2017
Thursday 2nd - Saturday 4th February  2017 (also open to potential mature students)
